For the administration of the medicines, the patient must be informed, asked (about possible medicinal substances to which he is allergic) after which he must cooperate in order to administer the medicines.

Mental preparation

·       the patient is informed about the need to administer the drugs;

·       its effect is explained to him (in the understanding of the patient);

·       it clarifies the importance of complying with the treatment (doses, schedule, rhythm of administration);

·       is informed about the route of administration and is asked to cooperate during the administration;

·       the patient's consent is requested for the administration of the prescribed medicine.

Physical training

·       the patient is informed that the integuments must be kept clean (partial toileting will be done if necessary);

·       the necessary position for the route of administration will be ensured:

·       supine or lateral recumbent with the head slightly raised, semi-sitting, sitting for the administration of digestive and respiratory drugs;

·       dorsal lateral ventral decubitus for local administration, on the surface of the skin and mucous membranes;

·       dorsal recumbency (I.V., I.D., S.C.), ventral (I.M.), lateral (I.M., I.V., S.C.).

Reactions that may occur following administration

·       pain: especially with parenteral administration, the application of substances on the surface of the skin and mucous membranes with injuries;

·       heat (Ca preparations administered intravenously; locally in case of tissue irritation);

·       taste modification: tinctures (administered as drops on sugar);

·       feeling of discomfort, dizziness and even hypothermia (parenteral administration – I.V.).

Conclusion

In order to administer a medicine in complete safety conditions, in addition to knowing the procedure, the medical assistant must be able to recognize and identify adverse effects, toxic reactions and drug allergies. Some adverse effects are transient and of low intensity, the patient developing a tolerance to the drug. Others require a change in drug therapy.

The administration of medicines in medical emergencies is a delegated intervention and is therefore carried out only on the doctor's recommendation and prescription.
