Measuring tension with a manual tensiometer
MEASUREMENT OF BLOOD PRESSURE WITH MANUAL TENSIOMETER
- The medical assistant washes his hands with soap and water;
- Check if the cuff contains air and remove it by opening the safety valve, if necessary;
- Close the valve well before applying the cuff;
- The pneumatic cuff is applied to the patient's extended arm, in the area of the radial or humeral artery (palpate the artery exerting slight pressure with your fingers to locate it);
- The cuff is applied circularly, around the arm, well stretched 2.2 - 5 cm above the elbow and fixed;
- The membrane of the stethoscope is fixed under the lower edge of the cuff at the level of the artery;
- Insert the olives of the stethoscope into the ears (beforehand, if necessary, wipe and disinfect the olives and the metal parts of the stethoscope with sanitary alcohol);
- The patient's arm must be supported at heart level and the palm facing up;
- Air is pumped into the pneumatic cuff by means of the rubber pump until the pulsating noises disappear;
- The air in the cuff is progressively decompressed by opening the valve;
- The appearance of the first noise represents the value of the systolic pressure;
- Mentally record the number indicated by the oscillating manometer needle at the moment you hear the first clear beat (Korotkoff sound);
- Continue the decompression and the last noise represents the diastolic pressure value;
- Remove the cuff and record the measured values, noting the patient's name, the date and the value obtained (Example: T.A. = 130/170 mmHg).
- Wash your hands at the end of the technique.
Graphic representation of blood pressure
- Calculate for each horizontal line in the temperature sheet, 10mmHg or 1 cmHg.
- Graphically represent the values resulting from blood pressure measurement by means of – a red rectangle, placed on the vertical line of time (D or S);
- The upper side of the rectangle represents the systolic pressure, and the lower side of the rectangle represents the diastolic pressure;
TEMPERATURE SHEET
On the temperature sheet B.T it can be noted:
- Numerical in the column reserved for this purpose;
- Graphically by hatching with a red pencil in the maximum and minimum value, one square is equal to one unit.
B.P. MEASUREMENT ON THE THIGH
- If it is not possible to measure B.P. at the level of the arms, you can measure the blood pressure at the thigh, at the level of the polite artery;
- Choose a sufficiently wide cuff;
- Position the patient on the abdomen to palpate the popliteal artery;
- Measure B.P. following the same steps as when measuring at the level of the arms;
- Keep in mind that B.P. it can be higher at the distal extremity compared to the proximal (upper) one.
