Objectives of drug administration
Local action – drugs must be applied with the help of substances that act for as long as possible on the place where they were applied.
General (systemic) action – means that the drugs (substance) are absorbed and enter the circulation.
Prevention of medication errors
Before administering any medication, it must be compared with the medication prescribed by the doctor from the observation sheet. The rule of the EIGHT administration conditions will be checked mentally:
- the right patient;
- the right medicine – it is checked before administration:
under quantitative aspect (gr., ml., no. pcs.);
- qualitatively
- color
- form of presentation:
- solid (tablets, tablets, granules, dragees, capsules, powders);
- liquid (tinctures, teas, ampoules, vials);
- semisolid (ointments, creams)
- concentration;
- warranty period
- the right dose – the medical assistant must know the difference between:
- therapeutic dose - at which the expected effect is obtained and no toxic reactions occur on the body;
- maximum dose – the largest amount of medicine supported by the body;
- toxic dose – the amount that causes toxic reactions;
- lethal dose – which kills.
- the appropriate route of administration:
- enteral;
- parenteral;
- local.
- the appropriate administration time (hour).
