SITUATIONS REQUIRING ADVANCED AIRWAY MANAGEMENT

-        Altered state of consciousness

-        Airway protection against aspiration of blood or gastric contents

-        Cranio-cerebral injuries that require hyperventilation

-        Patients who require sedation or anesthesia in order to perform computed tomography or of an emergency surgical intervention

-        Major chest wall trauma

-        Respiratory failure

-        The need for prolonged mechanical ventilation

THE LARYNGIAN MASK

Benefits:

-        It is inserted quickly and easily

-        Various sizes

-        More effective ventilation than with a face mask

-        Laryngoscopy is avoided

Disadvantage

-        No absolute guarantee against aspiration

-        Not recommended if very strong pressure is needed

-        The airway cannot be suctioned

COMBINATION

Advantages

-        It is inserted quickly and easily

-        Laryngoscopy is avoided

-        Protects against aspiration

-        Can be used if high pressures are needed

Disadvantages

-        There are only two sizes

-        Danger of ventilation through the wrong lumen

-        Danger of destroying the balloons upon insertion

-        Introduction trauma

-        Disposable
