THE STOMACH
THE STOMACH is the internal organ in which the major part of the digestion of food occurs, being (in humans and many mammals) a pear-shaped enlargement of the alimentary canal linking the oesophagus to the small intestine.
Problems:
• 80% of the disease can be detected in men aged 60-80, so hiatusthermia is increasingly common (not only in fat individuals); these cases need conservative treatment;
• ulcer disease – out of the patients that have this problem approx. 10% are over 60 (ulcus ventriculi exclusively in women, 80% of ulcus duodeni in men); it is a typical giant gastric ulcer with a short history, there is a lack of symptoms, and most frequent complications are bleeding and perforation; malignant degeneration is rarer (anyway, there are cases in which gastroscopy is justified);
• stomach cancer: there are non-specific symptoms, like loss of appetite, weight loss, anemia, pernicious anemia, anacidity.
